Come to our First Annual Napela Fundraising Dinner, September 15, 2018!

As a friend of Napela Inc, we wish to invite you to our First Annual Napela Fundraising Dinner on September 15, 2018, 8:00pm at The Crystal Room. In order for Napela to continue making a difference in our community, we rely on the generous contributions of individuals, organizations and businesses in our community. On September 15, Napela is gathering its friends and allies together for a dinner to help raise funds to support Napela’s programming and activities for the next year. Your support is critical to the growth and development of our youth and adult learners and Napela as a whole. Your generosity will help us cover our rental costs, staff tutors, purchase books and supplies, secure insurance, and infuse a fund to pay Park Hill Community Market and Napela Community Festival artists and performers in 2019. We would be grateful for you to contribute and attend the evening’s event, which will feature delicious food, presentations, art performance and great music. Please secure your seat as a Patron ($300), Sponsor ($500) or reserve a table for your organization (five seats for $1,000). Patrons have the privilege of inviting a guest, Sponsors can invite a guest and will have a half page advertisement in Napela’s souvenir program, and Organizations will have the privilege of inviting five guests and will have a full page advertisement in Napela’s souvenir program. Napela is a 501(c)3 and your donation may be tax deductible.

To secure your reservation or if you have questions, please email Adama Fassah at adama@napelanyc.org or contact Napela board Co-chairperson Dr. Bernadette Ludwig at Bernadette.ludwig@wagner.edu.

If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation at the “Donate” button at the upper right corner of our website. We also welcome you to mail a check to Napela Inc, 218 Market Street, Staten Island, NY 10310.

Thank you so much for your kind consideration. We look forward to connecting with you. Visit us here again for event updates.

Sincerely,

Napela Community Festival 2018 and Park Hill Community Market, Saturday, Sept 8

Free and open to all! Join us at the 5th Annual Napela Community Festival and Park Hill Community Market on Saturday, Sept 8, 2-6pm. Shop for unique cultural goods including clothes, fabrics, specialty produce, and prepared food and drinks. The afternoon will feature traditional folk art, dance and activities including great music from Yan, Ly, Mitch and Blamoh & The Traditional Dancers. The annual Miss Napela Princess will also be announced.

Napela Inc, a non-profit organization on Staten Island’s North Shore, works with West African and other immigrant and refugee women who are attending English language classes, are studying for the U.S. citizenship exam, and are entrepreneurs. Several participants connect all of these pieces together on summer afternoons at Park Hill Community Market, where they set up vendor stalls and create an open-air cultural marketplace in a former parking lot at Park Hill Apartments, a HUD Section 8 development. The market preserves and passes on culturs, building community cohesion in the process. According to Adama Fassah, founder of Napela and organizer of Park Hill Community Market, “We encourage our community to engage, identify, and share traditions so that our children might understand the rich cultural history that they come from.” In 2018, Napela added a children’s after school program to their adult education services.

Can’t make the festival and market on Sept 8? Consider attending the First Annual Napela Fundraising Dinner on Saturday, Sept 15 (see the post below this one) or donating to Napela Inc to help them purchase supplies, pay rent, secure teachers, and facilitate arts and cultural programming for the coming year! You can donate at the button on the upper right corner of this website.

Napela Community Festival 2018 and the Park Hill Community Market is organized by Napela Inc and co-sponsored by Citizens Committee of New York and the Napela board. The market and festival are also fortunate to partner with Staten Island Arts and Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts NY’s (NOCD-NY) Creative Transformations: Arts, Culture and Public Housing Communities program.
